Where did cockroaches originate from?
Cockroaches are one of the few creatures that have survived on the earth since the ages of dinosaurs. In fact, fossil evidence shows cockroaches have been here from 300 million years ago.
Over almost a 300million years, this creature has changed a lot of its appearance.
Cockroach’s family tree starts from Archimylacris eggintoni, which is an ancient ancestor of termites as well, used to have 6 legs and 2 wings. The length of Archimylacris species was between 2cm and 9cm.
While the appearance is pretty different from the cockroaches we know, The habits of this ancestor cockroach are very similar to modern cockroaches including :
- Eating lots of rotting plants and insects
- Running very fast to avoid predators
- Climbing trees
- Laying eggs on leaves
