Methamphetamine, or meth, is an illicit drug that can create serious health issues not just for the user, but for anyone who might come into contact with lingering residue. If the house you are occupying has ever previously been used to manufacture meth or housed heavy smokers, this can put the health of your family and yourself at risk. A test to detect the presence and volume of meth is quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive.
Australia has the highest percentage of meth usage across the English-speaking world. According to the 2013 National Drug Strategy Household Survey, around 1.3 million Australians (7% of the entire population) have used methamphetamine at some point in their lives. Of those, 400,000 (or approximately 2% of the total population) had used meth in the 12 months prior to taking the survey. This can be compared to statistics from the U.S. 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, where only 0.4% of the population reported ever using meth.
Clandestine Meth Labs
The Illicit Drug Data Report 2015–16 shows that, while the number of clandestine laboratories (‘clan labs’) identified nationally continued to decrease over the reporting period, Queensland accounted for 40% of labs detected across the nation.
“Nationally, around two-thirds of the clan labs detected in 2015–16 were in residential locations, posing significant risks to surrounding communities as they are used to covertly manufacture illicit drugs or their precursors, with many of the chemicals used both hazardous and corrosive in nature.” (ACIC, 2017) .
The number of clan labs discovered in Queensland is staggering, but the truth is much more frightening. The numbers reported from 2015-16 only account for around 10% of clan labs that are active. The real number of labs operating in Queensland is much higher, with 90% going unreported and therefore undetected.
